East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST)

East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) is a key university under the national “211 Project”, which was approved in 2008 to develop a “985 Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform”. It is part of the “Excellent Engineer Education Training Program” and the “111 Plan”. ECUST is one of the first six universities in the country to have a national technology transfer center, making it an innovative, comprehensive, and research-oriented institution. It’s also included in the country’s “Double First-Class” initiative for university development.

ECUST is committed to enhancing university students’ innovation and entrepreneurial abilities to achieve well-rounded development. Following the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) concept, the university systematically plans for interdisciplinary, inter-faculty, and cross-specialization collaboration in talent development. Innovation and entrepreneurship education is integrated throughout the talent development process. Leveraging its strengths in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, and more, ECUST uses an approach combining “engineering technology + business management”, guided by the values of EHS (Environment, Health, Safety), to build a unified undergraduate and graduate LCS (Lab + Club + Shop) model for innovation and entrepreneurship education. By establishing a matrix of support between relevant courses, practice systems, and innovation and entrepreneurship capabilities, ECUST strives to become a hub for talent that will contribute to a green, ecological, intelligent, and future China.

The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education at ECUST was established in 2016 to serve the university’s education in innovation and entrepreneurship. In recent years, the university has been recognized as a “National Practice and Innovation Base for Students by the Ministry of Education,” a “National Model University for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform,” and has received several titles such as “Shanghai Model University for Innovation and Entrepreneurship,” “Shanghai Demonstration Base for Entrepreneurial Incubation,” and “Shanghai University Entrepreneurship Guidance Station,” among others.

The center comprises an Office of Comprehensive Education Management, an Office of Practice Platform Management, an Office of Incubation and Transformation Management, and a Virtual Reality Teaching Lab. It manages innovation and entrepreneurship education for undergraduates and postgraduates, overseeing course construction, faculty team development, practice platform building, management of student innovation and entrepreneurship training programs, undergraduate research programs (USRP), website platform construction and maintenance, coordination of various levels of academic competitions, the transformation of innovation projects and technological achievements, and the incubation of entrepreneurial projects and teams.

The center continuously promotes the docking of scientific achievements, innovation resources with science park incubation bases, and co-creation spaces, offering students entrepreneurial projects and teams an integrated full-chain guidance incubation service from “innovation to nursery to incubation to acceleration to industry”. It has established an open platform for fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, relying on initiatives like “Dream Park”, “Daoqi Network”, and undergraduate entrepreneurial studios and incubation bases. This approach moves innovation and entrepreneurship education from the classroom and research labs to the market and real-world application, fostering the transformation of scientific achievements and integrating them with education in innovation and entrepreneurship.
